Time of Thankfulness!

As we begin our week break for Thanksgiving, I must share how thankful I am for all of you!

The students did such an amazing job of conducting their conferences. The goals and the strategies they developed were reflective and mature. I am honored to be a part of helping them meet these goals! One more step toward becoming the leaders of the future!

A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Walker, Ms. Macauley, and Mrs. Levy for setting up our beautiful feast! We appreciate all the families who brought in delicious food and those were able to join us for this celebration!

Enjoy your time off!

What We Are Studying, and More!

What a Fun-Filled Week!

In Math, we finished up learning about decimal division and moved on to Geometry. We will be studying the properties of shapes and measuring angles.

Review your decimal division with the following video.

In Language Arts, we finished up our Tall Tales and reviewed inferences and summaries. Next week we will begin reading The Kite Fighters using a Literature Circle format as we review and enhance the skills we have learned during the past two units!

In Science, we conducted experiments that taught us about convection currents. You can review the lessons here.
Next week we will use water bottles, syringes and tubes to learn about atmospheric pressure and air compression! It's always fun when we get to learn by "doing!" Parents can help out by letting their scientists reteach them the information!

In Social Studies with Mrs Gallo, students may re-take the States and Capitals test on November 9th if they need to.
Check out this video if you need a little help!
Next week, they will be discussing the election and the election process. Students will be able to "register" to vote and will even be given the opportunity to cast their own votes on Tuesday!

Next week, we will be working very hard getting ready for conferences. Students will be reflecting on the year so far to determine the areas in which they glow and the areas in which they need to grow. From these reflections, they will be determining reasonable goals and developing specific objectives to help them meet their individual goals. It is a life lesson for them and an amazing experience! I am sure you will be just as impressed with their visions and maturity as I am! We can't wait to share at our conferences.
If you have not already done so, please return your request for conference time as soon as possible!

Please note the following dismissal times:
Friday, November 9th at 12:33 PM
Monday, November 12th- NO SCHOOL
Tuesday, November 13th- 1:30 PM
Wednesday, November 14th, Thursday, November 15th, and Friday, November 16th- 12:33PM

Monday, November 19th- Friday, November 26th- THANKSGIVING BREAK/NO SCHOOL

Roving Reporter – Zachary
By: Zachary, 10 October 17, 2012

I began my day by first I woke up and went to pack my bag and put my homework in it. I got breakfast (a bagel and orange juice) and then went to school.
I was their early so I put my stuff down at the hand ball court and was getting ready to run. When I heard the bell ring I ran but went slow but not to slow so I was walking.  I ran 4 full laps but I took a walking break for a half of a backstop and ran then I had to do 5 laps but I did 6 on accident then. After we went to line up and went to class. When we got to class I saw that we moved seats and moved the class around then we got unpacked.
We started with language art and had to read the last of the story from yesterday and did a summary about it then we had to draw an icon but we didn’t have enough time. The bell rang to go to recess. I played on the appratice and on the monkey bars then the bell rang to line up.
When we went inside of the class we went to our seats and did a math test. While we waited till everyone was done we were quiet and did unfinished work or something quiet and then we were about to play games the bell rang for lunch.  I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and chips. Then we went to out to the yard to play and I played kickball and my team won. After lunch we went to watch the presidents where they give their speech to us and for us to vote for them. Then when they were done we went to our class rooms to vote.
After we voted we switched for social studies and started a study guide and when we were done with it we changed back to our class and the bell rang for after school.  I went to pack for tutoring and my mom picked me up and went home and now I’m writing this.

We started doing language arts quickly to start our lesson. I tried finishing my personal narrative[ if you don’t know what a personal narrative is it is a story about you] completely.  After our catch up time we started reading  A tall tale about Davy Crockett. Then the entire class  rushed out for recess. When I ran outside I felt a surge of excitement in my body, I was also a little happy that I got to play. I played handball, handball is a game that a person  hits a ratio of hits. After having fun we went inside to do math.  When I went inside the entire class to watch a math video about decimal division. After it was over Mrs . Gallo’s class left we started doing math rotations .  It was all about the lesson we learned. When we went to lunch I bought food from the cafeteria. I went to play handball again!  Finally for finale subject we did a big social studies test. It was about the government and its three branches. Some kids said ‘it was going to be a hard test’. Then for the finale of the day we wrote our homework, packed up, and dashed outside.

                           Roving Report

In the morning when the bell ringed .We lined up and waited for Mrs. Slezinger.  Immediately when I saw her I called Maisson and both of us went to class to unlock the door.  When the students arrived to class we went in, unpacked right away and went back to line up for cycle-motor.  Once we got to cycle-motor we lined up and Coach Allison arrived. She called a few names from all the 5th grade students to go practice the dance for the hunted house.  On stage we practiced and learned new moves for the dance.  After a while when cycle-motor was over, part of the 5th graders came to watch us practicing. After practice we went back to class and the rest of the students were working on their icons and tall tail.  We joined them as we listened to Munchkin Mediation songs. Afterwards we went to recess. During recess I was playing on the bars trying to make new flips with my friends. After recess we went right to ballroom dancing and learned more of Tango Gold.  The ballroom teacher Mrs. Moe made the two groups of the class to compete against each other. It was fun and exciting to find out who will win.  Following ballroom dance the whole class had to go to room 40 to get our eyes checked.  At our turn we had to cover one eye at a time and read the letter that lit up. There were three ladies that did that so it didn’t take as much time as if there was only one person. Once we finished we went back to class got our lunch boxes and went out to lunch.  During lunchtime I went to dance practice. I ate there and than start practicing the dance with the rest of the dancers.   After lunchtime we headed to line up.  We were waiting for Mrs. Slezinger to came and walk us to the computer lab. At the computer lab Mr. Regan taught us how to file different things. Following that we had to take two tests. One of the tests we took was about filing and one was about gigabytes.  Finally when our time at the computer lab was over we went back to classroom. As we arrived to class we started science. During science, we talked about our experiment we did a day before.  We made a graph to see how much the water and soil got hotter in the sun and cooler in the shade every three minutes and answered questions about it. Right after science we got our health stuff out and went to Mrs. Gallo class while Mrs. Gallo’s class came to our class to learn science. During health we discussed our packets and did some of it. Before it was time to switch again we had more time so we went over the answers. We switched right at 2:30 when the bell rang and it was time to go home. At the class Mrs. Slezinger told us “clean up, pack up and its t0 go home.’’

October 24, 2012

Hello, this is Roving Reporter Dashing Demetrius with some outstanding reports! Today we are going to explore another day in my life of a Welby Way student. This is going to be another outstanding educational exploration.
I arrived at school at 7:50 am this morning on a cool and chilly day.  As soon as I arrived I decided to play suicide with my classmates.  Suicide is a game that requires you to throw a ball at the handball court.  If the ball hits you before it hits the ground you have to run to the board and touch it before someone throws the ball to the handball wall.   If you fail to touch the wall you are out.    I was only able to play for about five minutes before the bell rang.  Darn it!   I didn’t get a chance to get the ball.  There is always another day.
When the school bell rang it was time to run our laps.  The laps are really easy for me because I run four times a week at 6:00 AM in the morning.  I am training for my black belt.   So I am always able to run the laps with no problem.  We had to run five laps today.  The laps were pretty uneventful today.  After the laps we headed to class.    Our first task of the day was to write our personal narratives.   I thought it was fun and I enjoyed doing it.  It took about twenty minutes to complete that task.  I was a piece of cake.  The next thing we did was to work on our icon project.    The icon project is when you draw your icon and then you must answer questions about a story.   My icon project is about “The Black Cowboy.”  I am enjoying this project also.  I am super interested in the story because the black cowboy accomplished things that had never been done before.  That project took about thirty minutes.
It was now time to work on your tall tale.  A tall tail is a story that takes real people and you must exaggerate what they really did. My tall tale is about my mom.    When I drew my mom it looked like she didn’t have any hair.  Then pencil I used didn’t show up much.  Mrs.  Slezinger told me that my mother surely has hair.  I decided to color the hair darker.   It was finally recess.  Yeah baby!   Recess was super fun me and my friends did flips on the playground.  We had lots of fun.
It was now time for me to go to my pre-algebra group.  I like going to this group because I love math.   After I came back from pre-algebra my group in math rotation was starting the second rotation.  I was able to join in at that point.  They were busy playing math games.  I got to play a game with April.  It was really exciting because I didn’t know which of us was going to win.  Wow April won!  I really thought I was gonna win.  I will challenge her another day.  At the third rotation it was math facts time and we had to figure out the problem of the day.  Okay I finally go to shine; I finished the math problem first.   I felt like a math super hero. I could hear my cap flapping in the wind.   The math rotations ended.  Shoot I was just starting to really have fun, but it is was now lunch time.
At lunch time I ate my lunch and then played prisoner with a few friends.  That was really fun because I caught the ball like a billion time!   Lunch seemed like it was over super quick.  Our team won. Yeah!  We rejoiced!   We went back to class and listened to Mrs. Slezinger read a chapter in a book called “Among the Imposters.”  It is a really book.  It is filled with excitement, fear and happiness.   It was now time for social studies in Mrs. Gallo’s class.  We learned about how the life of the Europeans on the ships in the 1450s.   Mrs. Gallo had us pair up into groups that showed us how to control your anger and how to keep friendships.  We switched back to Mrs. Slezinger for science.  Today’s science project taught how soil can heat up in the sun and how it cools down in the shade.  We also learned how water could heat up in the sun and how water can cool down in the shade.   It was now time to go home.
So that was a little peak into another fun filled day of education exploration!
